III.       Choose MIT

Craig B. – The Critical Friends Group, made up of teachers from all levels, meets to discuss educational issues. They have taken on the issue of effective communication, bringing together ideas from the Staff, Linda H., and components of non-violent communication. This group is developing Madrona community norms on how to treat each other and how to communicate with each other. The group also talked about decline in parent involvement due to more working parents; the feeling of ownership at school may be declining in some families because they don’t have the opportunity to be involved. The group also discussed the concept of the “choice” school. In order to make it work, you need to participate in the community. Linda H. assembled notes from these meetings, creating the initial framework of a behavioral agreement, much like the student and staff behavioral guidelines, which outlines who we are as a community and what we believe in. These guidelines are called “CHOOSE MIT”. These guidelines will be sent home with the back to school packets. They will be refined during the Learning Environment Team meeting which will be in mid-August. If you are interested in joining this work group, where the student behavior guidelines will also be reviewed, please send an email to Lynda or Craig. Notification will be sent out the first of August with the date and time of the meeting.

III.             MIT Board Elections

Ballots go out in tomorrow’s mail. The MIT Board will be ratified by the first meeting of the school year.

V. Parents’ Night Out Proposal

Discussion regarding the proposal for a Parents’ Night Out during the next school year. This is a fundraising opportunity for the middle school European trip. There is a good ratio of teens/kids. The kids will be split up by age group, in separate classrooms, to better tailor activities during the evening. Charge will be $25 for first child/$10 for additional children. Proceeds will be divided by middle school students who work the event. Event will be supervised by parents. This is a student fundraiser activity and not an MIT event.

VI.       Grant Proposal - Little Kids’ Playground Additional Funds

For the playground, $2700 has been raised by Entertainment Book sales, $2200 contributed from MIT, and $2000 contributed from the Child Hearing League. The school district has agreed to pay for half of the playground, but requests our funds now to arrange payment for the equipment. Linda H. proposed that MIT fund an additional $1000, bringing the total MIT contribution to $3200. Motion made to fund additional $1000 for Playground; motion approved.
